Do you have a craft or skill you would like to teach?

As a non-profit organization, our mission is to inspire and educate both young people and the general public in the artistry and skills of the trades. To further this goal, the Blue Ox Historic Village is continually seeking opportunities to broaden our range of workshops and classes.

We are especially interested in finding instructors for the following crafts and trades:

  • Blacksmithing

  • Lapidary Arts

  • Lathe Turning

  • Wood Carving

  • Ceramics (slipcasting & wheel throwing)

  • Leather Craft

  • Fiber Arts (spinning, dyeing, felting)

  • Letterpress Printing

  • Bookbinding

  • Printmaking

  • Jewelry Making

We are looking for talented individuals that have the following abilities:

  • Willingness to teach in small settings (4 or less students)

  • The ability to connect with individuals across a wide spectrum of experience

  • A solid technical knowledge of their craft

  • Eager to work in a experimental hands-on setting

  • Strong enthusiasm for promoting the classes and workshops they teach

  • As a Blue Ox Docent, you'll find joy in sharing your craft with others. If you're someone who:

    Enjoys engaging in conversations about your craft

    Takes pride in demonstrating your craft to others

    Loves crafting and creating unique items

    Possesses knowledge about your craft or is eager to learn more

    Thrives in a collaborative team environment

    ...then you're the kind of person we're looking for!

  • Being a docent also means taking care of your craft space. This includes:

    Regular cleaning and maintenance

    Creating and enjoying your craft in a clean and organized workspace

    Sharing your craft through demonstrations during self-guided tours

    Leaving your workspace ready for others to use

  • We encourage our docents to get involved in our community by committing to a set number of hours each month for activities such as:

    Demonstrating during scheduled guided tours

    Participating in Blue Ox Special Events

  • To enrich your experience as a docent, we encourage you to expand your knowledge in two key areas

    Your Craft

    Explore and experiment with techniques relevant to the Victorian era or earlier

    Learn from others through workshops, reading, and online resources

    Blue Ox Millworks and Historic Village:

    Familiarize yourself with our philosophy and history

    Learn about the Blue Ox community through documentaries and interactions

    Explore areas of our facility outside your craft field

    Collaborate with fellow Blue Ox craftspeople
